What categories can I send you?
We will read YA, NA, and adult. At this time, we do not handle Picture books, Chapter books, or Middle Grade, as we aren’t as familiar with the trends and requirements of those categories.
What genres are you open to?
We’ll read almost anything, but to make things easy we’ve listed it out. If you don’t see your novel’s genre(s) listed, feel free to contact us and tell us about your novel.
What we will read:
Adult/NA: Scifi (Including Gamelit/LitRPG. Harem projects are considered on a case by case basis), Fantasy, Romance (all subgenres other than Christian Inspirational), Erotica (No porn. The sex scenes should be integral to the story.) Thriller. Horror. Literary Fiction (Including Women’s Fiction/Chick Lit), and the occasional Historical fiction, depending on the concept.
YA: Scifi, Fantasy, Contemporary, Romance (Again, all subgenres, no erotica or porn as YA please!), Thriller, Horror, Humorous Fiction. Historical Fiction/Romance.
We would love to work on anything with LGBT themes and focus. We also encourage diverse books and would love to see more diversity in fiction. See our section on sensitivity for areas of particular interest. Feel free to ask if you don’t see something mentioned there, as our editors have either personal or secondary experience with many areas of diversity and for those we don’t, we may have contacts who do we can refer you to!
What we will not read:
Non-fiction, porn, poetry, children’s books, Christian inspirational, westerns without speculative elements.
How do I know if we’re a good fit?
If you’re looking at one of our novel sized options, we will gladly provide an example of our feedback based on 1250 words (5 industry standard pages) of your project and we’ll discuss options best suited to you and your needs. Please note if you are looking at a Developmental Edit, the sample on five pages will be indicative, but vague out of necessity because of the length of the sample.
If you have concerns or questions, just ask.
What if the book I need edited is in the middle of an established series?
If you’re in the middle of a series, please contact us if you think we would need to do more than look over a synopsis of the earlier works. Each case depends on what you are most comfortable with your editor knowing and how connected the books are. If the books are standalones within a series, it doesn’t matter, but if there’s an overall plot arc, we may need to read the previous books, potentially at a charge.
How do you perform inline critiques?
We use MICROSOFT WORD track changes for any options that require us to comment or correct within a manuscript. We ask that the documents be sent in .doc or .docx. However if you have another preference, please let us know.
What if I’m not sure about which option or package will best suit my needs?
Please fill out our contact form and let us know what you’re debating between. We will contact you within 48 hours to discuss your options and try and match the best option or package to suit your needs.
Where are your prices?
Since many services have different prices depending on the length of your manuscript and which options you choose, they’re listed with the service. See Editing Services, and then select a category to view the prices. Bear in mind, bundles and special offers may lower the cost, and we can work with you to figure out the best option for your manuscript and price range. Payment options can also be arranged on a case by case basis.
What sort of turn around time can I expect?
It depends on how busy our schedule is and what options you’ve chosen. Short things, like query/blurb critiques don’t take us very long. Most projects under 100k take about a week. Longer projects may take two or three weeks, depending on length and schedules.
If you book in advance with a timeframe in mind, we slot a specific amount of time aside for you. When we do this and give you a due date, we will abide by this date. We often get booked up in advance, so it’s best to contact us to reserve a date as soon as you’re sure your project will be ready.
Do you do rush jobs?
If our schedule allows for it, we will do rush jobs. However, there will be a 20%+ surcharge on the service if we have to slot you into an otherwise mostly full schedule. The fee varies with the quality of manuscript and how quick the requested rush is. Bear in mind, not all rush jobs can be accommodated, and in order to do the highest quality work, not all rush projects can be accommodated.
How far in advance can I book?
Up to a year in advance. Please try to make sure that you will be able to keep this booking, as we do ask for 50% of the fee in advance as a nonrefundable deposit.
What if I need to reschedule my booking?
We understand life happens sometimes. If you’ve scheduled in advance, please make sure you can hold yourself to it. If you need to reschedule, we will do our best to accommodate. Considering the nature of bookings, we may not have a slot in your new time, and may have turned away potential clients due to your original booking. If you must reschedule, please let us know as soon as possible.
Should we need to squeeze you into a new slot, it may incur a 20%+ reschedule fee at our discretion. Deposits are nonrefundable, but can be applied to a later project if necessary.
How is payment set up?
Once we’ve settled on the right option or package and selected a date, we will invoice you. If the amount is for under $100, we ask for upfront payment. If the amount is for $100 or over, we will invoice 50% of the cost as a nonrefundable deposit to secure your spot, and 50% when your time slot is due. If you need a payment arrangement different from that, please let us know. We consider these on a case by case basis.
Once we’ve scheduled your service, we will invoice you directly, by Square or Paypal, depending which editor you are working with.
This allows us to accept payment from:
VISA
Mastercard
American Express
Discover Card
JCB
If you have gift cards (or debit cards) registered to you with the above emblems, these can also be used. Please note, all rates listed are in USD. If you are working with our UK or Canadian editors and are also in that country, payment can be set at an equivalent rate in that local currency.
Can you suggest agents or publishers for me?
While we’ve worked extensively with a few wonderful agents, targeting agents and publishers is not just about manuscript. It’s also about personality matching and communication styles. Everyone’s journey to publication is different, and so we could never in good conscience suggest for another person. We do have some writer resources that might help you over on our resource page.
Can you get my book published?
We hope our editing helps you reach that point, but actually publishing books is beyond the scope of our work. We aren’t publishers in any form. While we hope to help you pinpoint weaknesses and work toward a great end product in all of our services, Chimera Editorial Services is just that — an editorial service.
